Interview: How to Build Strategic Alliances with Marsha Wright
Marsha Wright is a serial-entrepreneur, four time #1 bestselling author, speaker, and columnist. She has an impressive array of business interests all over the world. In addition to growing her own businesses and portfolio, she has become a well known business expert, which has resulted in her appearing on TV, in newspapers and magazines and on radio internationally.
Below is a summary of our interview:
“To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.”
― Winston Churchill
For the last six months, Marsha has been traveling. And she’ll be doing another 6 months of traveling. She travels with her husband. Her business range from consulting to media. She has an acquisitions company, as well. Her husband and herself started on her journey in 1998. They’ve been together 16 years. An inkling that she knew was going to be in business started when she was 7 years old. She’s the oldest of 3 and her brother is closest in age. They’d go to the corner shop for really cheap sweet candy in a big bag and get small bags, then break up the candies and put them in the small bag and sell them in the playground. She didn’t realize what she was doing was entrepreneurial at the time, but she just had fun. Her mom was a single mom. Her dad was already in prison at that time. Marsha was independent at a very early age. Between the ages of 8 and 12, she was in and out of group homes, she had difficulty in school, and she didn’t know how to deal with her experience when she was eight. Working through that process with a social worker, she had a good relationship with, helped her and made a huge impact in her life. At 7 months old, she had been walking. So she was always very advanced. She didn’t want to put up with the way the world worked and wanted to question everything. Being inquisitive helped Marsha build the career that she has today.
The time when she was 8 years old and experienced being sexually assaulted. She really didn’t know how to deal with that.
Getting into the strategic alliance business and becoming an authority on the subject wasn’t a quick thing. Strategic alliances aren’t just one single project. it’s looking intrinsically at one relationship. Marsha wants to give to the relationship as much as she’s able to receive. Quite unwittingly, she was doing strategic alliances and collaborations the whole of her career.
Marsha’s work now
Marsha’s book, Secret Collaborative Economy, launched last year in June 2013 and she wrote the book in 5 days. One of her mentors had said “it took you 5 days to write it, but it took you 15 years to get that knowledge.” She did need an interview . She promoted the book to over 1 million people. She did a huge promotion on it; Twitter was exploding. And she celebrated a best seller in over six countries. It was the hottest new marketing book. But the point was all of her promotion was through collaboration.
