Interview: How to go from Doctor to Congresswoman with Donna Christensen
Donna Christensen is a US Representative for the United States Virgin Islands. And she’s running to become the first African American woman as a Governor of the Virgin Islands.
Below is a summary of our interview:
“The future belongs to those who give the next generation reason for hope.”
Donna grew up on an island by the name of Saint Croix, where she had a great childhood as an only child. She could walk everywhere she could walk home from school. After high school, she went to college in Notre Dame, Indiana. Then she went to medical school for adolescent medicine, which she didn’t eventually do. After her residency was over, she came home to practice medicine in the community that raised her. She discusses how she was raising two children while she organized and did all the work for the community as a Democrat. She was developing platforms, helping other candidates, but everyone wanted her to run. So she did. Being a family physician allows you to understand the family, and history and the dynamics. Donna felt like she took her small office practice to a larger community – becoming a Congresswoman.
While she was preparing to go to medical school, people said that it wasn’t a good idea for her. When not everyone was encouraging, and after Donna’s return home, people had hoped she didn’t come back. She looks at it as a trying time.
Her first one was when she finally started working at home in St. Croix and people appreciated that.
Donna’s work now
As a representative, she wakes up anxiously to go and serve the community and work with individual constituents and family, which she likes because it takes her back to almost being a physician.
What’s challenging Donna now
She’s running for Governor of U.S. Virgin Islands.
